Rain, Rain, Rain!

There is nothing better than playing in the warm rain! Don't forget your rubber boots!

Enjoy!

Rain activities with a link have been featured on the It's All Kid's Play blog. These activities may have a photo on the blog as well as more detailed instructions than are shown here.

P.S. Wondering where a favourite activity went? The site is undergoing some changes and some of the activities have been temporarily shelved. Check back to see what's in the works.

Let's Go Outside!

  • Count worms
See how many worms have come out onto sidewalks due to the rain.

  • Jump in mud puddles
Don't forget to wear your rubber boots!

  • Toothpick races
Race little twigs or toothpicks in puddles or mud puddle streams after/during the rain.

  • Make rivers between puddles
Join puddles together by digging a trench between them.

  • Look for a rainbow and a pot of gold

  • Smell the rain

  • Count thunder
During a thunder storm, look out your window and watch for lightning. When you see it flash across the sky, begin counting until you hear the accompanying thunder. (Thunder is the sound caused by lightning.) Count slowly, one-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand, until the thunder comes. Take that number and divide it by 5. That is how many miles away the lightning is from you. Some people don't divide by 5, and since we're just having fun, you don't have to either--unless you want to.
Safety First: During a thunder storm, stay out from trees, the water and other areas that attract lightning.

  • Rain Paint
Drop food colouring on a piece of cardboard or paper plate. Place the cardboard or plate in the rain. The rain will splash the food colouring, making it spread as well as make the colours mix. When the picture is as mixed as you want, pull it inside and let it dry.
Hint: if it is raining hard, the rain will splash the food colouring--be careful, it stains clothes.
