With A Friend!

Grab a friend (or more) and check out these activities. There are lots of things to do, try them all! If you don't know how to play some of these, ask an adult or look it up in a book or online.

Enjoy!

Food Fun activities with a link have been featured on the It's All Kid's Play blog. These activities may have a photo on the blog as well as more detailed instructions than are shown here.

P.S. Wondering where a favourite activity went? The site is undergoing some changes and some of the activities have been temporarily shelved. Check back to see what's in the works.

Sit Down Games

  • Penny Rugby (also known as ‘Quarters’)
Find a friend, a table and a penny (or other coin).
The two players sit across from each other at a small table. One person goes first. They start with the penny overhanging (balanced half on and half off the edge of the table) on their side of the table. They flick the penny with their fingers or bump it with their hand. They try to get the penny to stop just as it overhangs the edge of the other end of the table. The player can bump or flick it up to 3 times to get it across the table. If the penny goes off the table or doesn’t overhang, they do not get points and the turn goes to the other player.
If the penny overhangs, the flicking player gets 5 points and a chance to go to goal. To go to goal, the player spins the penny on the table and catches it between their thumbs while it is spinning. (If it is not caught between the thumbs, the turn ends). If it is caught, the other player makes a goalpost by placing their two thumbs together and spreading their hands out, fingers up. The player with the penny keeps the penny between their thumbs and ‘throws’ the penny through the goal (2 more points). Whether it goes in or not, it is the end of this player’s turn.

  • War (card game)
You will need 2 decks of playing cards and two players. Each player gets a deck of cards (make sure you shuffle them well). Players face each other. At the same time, each player takes the top card off their deck and place it face up. Whichever player has the highest card wins the other person’s card. (Aces are the highest card.)
For example: Jo has a queen and Sally has a king. Sally wins Jo’s queen. If both players deal the same card, there is a tie and players go to war. Each player deals four cards, face down. At the same time, players show the top card off their deck. The highest card wins the war and all of the cards (the first deal which was tied, the four face down cards from each player, plus the last card dealt). If that is a tie as well, then you deal four cards face down plus the one face up. When players reach the end of their deck, they can use the cards they have won as their new deck. When one player runs out of cards completely, the game is over.

  • Memory
Take a deck of playing cards and lay them all face down on the table or floor. When it is your turn, flip two cards over, keeping them in their spot on the table or floor. If they are a pair, you take them and put them in your pair pile. If they are not a pair, turn them face down again. The next player takes their turn. If you get a pair, you get to turn two more cards over--keep going until you don't make a pair.
Whoever makes the most number of pairs wins the game. (You can also play this one alone.)

  • Board games
If you are tired of your board games, ask your parents if you can trade with a friend. You can also change or make up your own rules for the games you do have to make them new and interesting again.
Have a...

  • Staring contest

  • Pillow fight

  • Watermelon seed spitting contest
See who can spit them the farthest (outside) or the most at one time. It might be tricky finding a watermelon with seeds!

  • Book swap with your friends
Have you read all of your books? Trade some with friends to get books you haven’t read yet. (You may need to ask your parents first.)

  • Race

Two Players

Silly Stuff

  • Make up funny words and definitions (meanings) for them

  • Make up definitions for words you don’t know
Look in the dictionary for a word you don’t know. Don’t look at the definition until you have made your own. It can be silly or serious. Did anyone get it right?

  • Tell jokes
Need a few to get you started? Check these ones out.

  • See who can be quiet for the longest

  • Hold a Liar’s Club
Get some friends together and see who can make up the biggest, silliest story that is not true. For example, my aunt once made up a story where my dad took a huge jump on his windsurfer and ended up landing in the back of a semi-truck!

  • Make a people sandwich
Pile three people on top of each other. The bottom person is the bread, the middle person can be sandwich meat, lettuce or tomato and the top person is bread. If you have a really small person they can go on the very top of the top as a pickle. Careful, it gets squishy for the person on the bottom!
  • Rock, Paper, Scissors
Rock beats scissors. Scissors beats paper. Paper beats rock.
Each player (2 players are best) makes a fist and on the count of three everyone reveals rock, paper or scissors.
To make a rock, make a fist. To make paper, lay your hand flat. To make scissors, do the peace sign but with your hand pointing sideways (pointer finger and middle finger pointing straight out of a fist).
When playing a new game, this is a fun way to find out who goes first.

  • Pick a Hand
With your hands behind your back, place a small item in your right or left hand. Then have your friend try and guess which hand it is in. No cheating!

  • Thumb war
“One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war! Thumbs, get in your corners. Ready?  Three, two, one, go!”
Two players face each other. The players hold right hands and curl their fingers into each other’s palms so their hands ‘lock’ with each other’s. Both players touch the tips of their thumbs together. See which player can pin down the other player’s thumb with their thumb for three seconds.

  • Arm wrestle

  • Draw with your finger on someone’s back
Gently draw something on a friend’s back using your finger. They have to guess what you are drawing or writing.

  • Mirror
Once person moves and makes faces while the other person stands in front of them and pretends they are a mirror. The mirror tries to do the exact same things at the same time as the other person.

Rides

Games (Great for Parties)

  • Horse rides
Get down on all fours and let someone small climb on your back. Crawl around with them on your back and neigh like a horse!

  • Piggy back rides

  • Airplane rides
Lay on your back. Have someone smaller than you stand by your feet. Place your feet on their stomach and hold their hands tightly. Carefully pull your legs up until they are sticking straight up and the person is laying on their stomach on your feet, face to face with you. They are now an airplane flying through the sky!

  • Guess that tune
Take turns with friends humming songs you know. You hum, they guess. No words or actions are allowed.

  • Spoon water races
This game is best played outside. You will need a couple of friends, some water, containers and some spoons. The idea is to empty one small container of water into another. The trick is, you can only use a spoon to take the water from one container to the other.  The further the containers are apart, the harder it will be. See who can get the most in the empty container, the fastest.

  • Scavenger hunt
You can play this by yourself or with a friend. If playing with a friend,  see who finds all of the items on the list first. Or, if there are a bunch of you, make teams.
You can use the list below or have someone make a list for you. You can also make your own list, but be sure not to make it too easy!
    A toothpick
A rock the size of your pinky fingernail
    A feather
    A penny
A dust bunny (the clumps of dust that gather under the fridge)
    A pillow
    Something you would read
Something with the letter ‘J’ on it
    Salt
    An insect
    A leaf
    Glue
A monkey (not a real one!)

  • Steam Roller
Lay on the floor and roll over each other. (I don’t recommend playing with someone much bigger than you because you will get squished!)

  • Pig in the Middle
You will need three people. Two players throw or roll a ball between themselves. The third player is the pig and stays in between the other two players and tries to get the ball. When the pig gets the ball, the player who threw or rolled the caught ball becomes the pig. (You can also play this with a Frisbee.)

  • Have a theme party
Have friends over for a sleepover or an afternoon of fun. You can make it a theme party by calling it a superhero party, a princess party, a camping party or whatever you like. If it is a camping party, your guests will need to bring things like sleeping bags and you can camp out in the backyard and do camping activities like sing campfire songs, make s’mores, cook hot dogs, etc.

  • Make a new friend
Who is that new kid on the block? That person making a sandcastle over there? Go introduce yourself!

  • Create your own club

  • Make a cheerleading routine

  • Draw a picture together
